Moving to Naples, Italy. How's orthodontics there, and how are the schools?

Got a job offer for a GS job in Naples. Both my kids have braces on their teeth. Is there adequate orthodontists in the area? Also, my kids will be 13 and 10, so we would have one in the high school and one in elementary school. Are the schools good?

I currently live in Naples - My wife is a training and curriculum specialist for the Child youth Program on the Naval support site, the on post schools have a poor reputation - if you can - enroll your children in the Italian school system - as for orthodontics - chances are the dental clinic will outsource such work for your dependants. It is a small base/station and does not have the facilities to handle non active duty issues. I take it you will be working at the Nato base here in Lago Patria, and I can tell you with confidence that living here is amazing, We have been here since November and I can honestly tell you I have never had a bad meal on the economy. I will warn you that there will be a culture shock, Naples is not the cleanest city, and the roads, minus the autostrade, are horrible. Also , if you have a large vehicle, I suggest you leave it in the states, and buy one on this side - the roads are crazy narrow and all have two way traffic on them. Other then that - welcome to Italy, you will have a great experience visiting some cultural sites and ruins. Do not let the on post school situation deter you - there are plenty of Italian schools that teach in English, I would say about half the American population here send there children to off post schools.

Thank you for the scoop. I may have a couple more questions if/when we decide to accept the offer. Cheers.

I know Col Patrick Charters has spent some good time in Naples and might have some insight here.

I spent 10 years in the NAVEUR HQ there and two years at NATO in Logistics for the Air
Component Command that has moved. I did not have children there so I am not aware of the quality of DOD school on Naval Support Facility. I never heard any complaints There is bus service from the more common areas of Naples. They have a full sports program and all the after school activities of a big HS in the U.S. Also the policy ,when I was there, allowed Civilians to live in Naval Facility housing. My experience with orthodontics is limited. The Civilian Dental care I received on the economy was good. I had crowns done by a Dentist just off the support site that was married to a U.S.Navy Doctor and was educated in the U.S. It depends on your situation, but I agree with the previous comment, that living off base was good. Many people that live in quarters never get out and enjoy the wonderful culture, food and entertainment.
