Always an avid artist, Hoffman was in the U.S. Army in 1951 and stationed in Ulm, Germany, after having been drafted at the height of the Korean War. Things had changed quickly and, after basic training, rather than being sent to Korea, the infantry company became part of the post-World War II occupation forces in the southern part of Germany.
