I speak Chinese (mandarin) fluently as a bilingual, I was told I could get language pay if I take the test and pass. But my MOS is not language-related, can I still do this? Would there be other opportunities without reclassing to language??

My wife was a medic and was paid for her fluency in Korean, and then it dropped off of the list of needed languages. Now it is back on the list. Check out SrA John Monette's links. They are right on track. There is a language proficiency test that you will need to take. Go to the education center to request more information on when and where you can take the test. Pay varies by needs of the Army for your language. It can fluctuate. I do not believe that you will need a re-class. What is your MOS?

The Defense Language Proficiency Test (or DLPT) is a battery of foreign language tests produced by the Defense Language Institute and used by the United States Department of Defense (DoD).

NM, your MOS is on your profile...
Yeah you should be good in intel.
Even if you do not get paid for Mandarin, still take the test and have it placed on your ERB. That will also demonstrate your abilities to your seniors.

SSG(P) (Join to see) - right on point, thank you! That's what I thought...so control lists count too? Mandarin is on it, but not the immediate investment one. I definitely wanna take the DLPT even just to have it on my ERB, but I'd also like to actually have assignments (of course, and pay) without reclassing, I was hoping secret clearance might also help.

Secret Clearance would help getting jobs like mine. I am out of MOS but have not re-classed. Do not stay long in these kind of assignments though. You need to prove that you can and have mastered your field. You can also follow my wife's path and be assigned as a language instructor for a couple of years.
