What one Marine can do
While the enemy was hammering at the Marine's defensive positions, Sgt. Basilone . . . fought valiantly to check the savage and determined assault. In a fierce frontal attack with the Japanese blasting his guns with grenade and mortar fire, one of [his] sections with its gun crews, was put out of action, leaving only two men to carry on.

Moving an extra gun into position, he placed it in action, then, under continual fire, repaired another and personally manned it, gallantly holding his line until reinforcements arrived.

A little later, with ammunition critically low and supply lines cut off, Sgt. Basilone, at great risk of his life and in the face of continued enemy attack, battled his way through the hostile lines with urgently needed shells for his gunners, contributing . . . to the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment.

Well I definitely do not see a repeat of the Battle of Thermopylae. Give those 300 Marines some air support and watch real warriors do their thing!

I foresee the future. ISIS comes in strong with SVBIEDS, they get tangled in the perimiter wire and blow up. Then, they will funnel themselves into a chokepoint they created in the opening of the wire-straight into 240s and .50s. Meanwhile Apaches and Cobras start spinning up for air support. ISIS then advances into the next set of wire, and realize their f***ed. As machine guns spray enfilade fire, the terrorists will retreat to a building where air support smokes the stragglers.

Not good for ISIS? Or, not good for the Marines?

Personally, I would say not good for ISIS. :)

This is nowhere near a Khe Sahn situation. ISIS is essentially a bunch of semi trained light fighters running around with small arms and very llittle heavy weaponry (the NVA, conversely, were very well equipped with Soviet artillery and other heavy weapons and were arguably some of the best light infantry in the world circa the '60s). The Marines are highly trained and motivated and well equipped. They're not going to run from a fight, and are more likely eager to "get some." As long as the airfield is clear and secure, the Marines can fly in CAS and reinforcements/supplies at will. The only issue that I can see is that Al Asad is HUGE (I was there in OIF 1 and even with grabbing a Humvee to do a llittle boredom killing exploring, only saw a small portion of the base) and the perimeter can be hard to secure with a small force.
