So I just re-enlisted from the IRR into active duty. I am told that the best way to get my family and HHGs is by flying out alone, in processing, then requesting PTDY at my new unit to have the military movers pack my belongings and for me to be able to pick up my POV and wife. Is this the only way? I will be having to drive from NYC to bliss and was also wondering if I would still be entitled to DLA, per diem, MALT, and TLE.

So the PTDY regulation changed and it had to be either taken at the gaining location or the losing location and can’t be used to travel back to a location to facilitate a move. TLE is used to pay for a hotel until a house is ready at the gaining installation. The best way to do it would be to call the transportation office at either Fort Drum or Fort Bliss and see if they can set up HHGs for you. You will need your orders to start that. CONUS moves are different from OCONUS and usually requires concurrent travel to get a house. Because you are a specialist, you will have to move your family with you or end up in the barracks until they get to Bliss. You can’t fly to Bliss? Sign in, then go on PTDY back to NY to move your family. PTDY is used for house hunting, or other activities that would benefit the service or unit (600-8-10) states this explicitly. So to answer your question, what you want to do is not gonna fly.
