Had a soldier get in trouble for disrespecting a NCO and his corrective training was to write a 1000 word essay on the definition of disrespecting a NCO, the effects of disrespecting a NCO, and the legal ramifications of said actions. The soldier turned in a word for word document you can find on the internet. 100% plagiarized. Any thoughts? Any words of advice of my next course of action?

No. Not okay. His task was to WRITE the essay. Not to find one. I'm going to assume that there was a 4856 on the issue (which dictated the essay as a corrective action). Following that, in place of a close-out, should be another 4856 outlining the un-sat behavior. This is two negative counselings for, realistically, one issue. One more, and that's grounds for an Article 15 for Patterns of Misconduct. However, if you want to avoid hamstringing this kid, I would suggest simply writing the second counseling, assign him a 2,000 word essay and give him a 3-day deadline. If he cannot complete the assignment, then he has had his chance at redemption and the Article 15 is both warranted and expected for impartiality.

Speaking of plagiarism. I remember writing a paper all with my own words and ran in through a plagiarism program and came out to be 95% plagerized. Go figure with the Internet. In your 4856 if you did not state, 'in your own words' give me a 1000 word essay on said topic then I feel you don't have much ground to stand on. You asked for an essay, said sm gave you said essay. I'm not saying what he did was right, but it seems like with anything in the military now a days, you have to spell it out and spoon feed. Not like back when wall to wall counseling work better then 4856's or article 15's.

if in your own words not givin, no reguard, but plagererism thats the easy way out, thats why clear and concise guidence needs to be givin, to theses younger troops, its the easy way out unless you tell them differently, wall to wall miss it dearly, but we are a new army make your instructions clear and to the point, give no wiggle room

All this about being precise about instructions on a corrective assignment shouldnt even be an issue. The soldier clearly didnt have the integrity to write his own essay. You can bet if it was one of my soldiers we would be going around back and doing physical training. Thats disrespectful, thats dishonorable, its a shot against that soldiers integrity. The soldier pretty much came back with a slap to your face. No NCO should stand for that.

ok shithouse lawyers. make him lead a class for all new soldiers coming in from AIT on keeping respect and order with NCO's and Jr Officers. make him do it for 6 months. find an NCO to mentor and assist him in this class. too often you guys choose to burn down a soldier instead of building up and educating a better soldier. some of you should be ashamed of yourselves.

SGT Parker, in my mind assigning a Soldier a 1000 word essay is an easy way for you to take the Soldier's time without investing any of your own time in the process. There are many variables to this that are not stated though (how new is the Private, is this a first offense, level of disrespect, etc.). Rather than assigning an essay try investing some time to teach the Soldier on how to properly conduct a block of instruction, and then have him educate the rest of the Team/Squad/Platoon on the punitive articles of the UCMJ, specifically Articles 91&92, the max effective punishments of a courts martial for each, and the max effective punishments under Article 15 given by Company, Field, or Strategic Level Commanders.

MAJ Carl Ballinger - Yes sir. The way I see it sir is if I believe the soldier will learn something about what they did wrong then I can say I've done a good job.

1SG (Join to see) - I understand 1SG. My goal in corrective training it to help teach the soldier a little more about what they did incorrectly that way they can never say they didn't know and so the soldier understands not to do it again.

MAJ Carl Ballinger - Sir, We (PAO- Journalist) can write a thousand word essay in about thirty minutes. Creative writing is our forte. I wrote one of my wife's 8-page nursing-school papers, in about an hour and a half. I (I mean she) scored an A- on it. I know nothing about nursing or doctor stuff, but once my wife told me we could reference facts, but in my own words, I cranked it out with no issues. I wouldn't do it normally, but I am paying for her nursing school and she was studying for a test in one of her other 4 classes.

The only times I have seen Soldiers have to sign into CQ as corrective training, was twice:

1) First one could not be at formations on time. So Soldier had to sign into CQ one hour before PRT formation, to insure he was awake and on time (Soldier excuse: "I forgot to set my alarm clock... again")

2) Soldier in a location where there is curfew i.e.. overseas, and Soldier had to sign into CQ when leaving the Camp and sign in to CQ one hour before off-post curfew was in effect even if the Soldier was not going off Camp. (Soldier excuse for busting curfew was: he didn't realize how long it would take him to walk back to the camp. This was first offense, as curfew is a huge deal here. So I think that was a little easy on him. But happened prior to my arrival)

A policy on Motorcycle mentorship written at CORPS level is BEST plagiarized when the DIV leader writes thier version, and then specifics as needed added.
An order for a recurring event be it Div run or annual gunnery that worked well, was complete, concise easy to understand and well executed without rescinds or FRAGOS should be plagiarized next time then updated as needed.

NO plagiarism is not ok with the stated or implied task is to CREATE a document,or written product.
As the situation you detailed the event that SM did not write a response he supplied one.
