With all of the various catastrophic incidents that happen there, I would say they need to be serious about every warning they hear about COL Mikel J. Burroughs, and stay prepared for everything.

I really can't speak for California, but in Alaska we ARE looking at all the signs of a long, cold winter with higher than average snowfall. Our Autumn has started, and those who have been living here a lifetime are seeing signs among the vegetation (fireweed), and many of the animal species, that the winter could be especially harsh. We will just prepare for the worst, as we do every winter, and hope for the best. What more can you do?

Being prepared isn't going to hurt. Â If not prepared people will say "I should'a" , if prepared, "I'm glad we were or what a waste". Â The Weather man is the last one to "win". Â Similar to MI, the S-2 says, "we're gong to get hit tonight," Â if you do the S-2 can do no wrong, Â if you don't, the S-2 doesn't know what he's talking about. Â :-)

A catastrophic weather pattern in the Americas should probably be called something on the order of El Ninio or better yet a Native American storm name :-)
California has been battling a drought brought on by natural effects to some degree and political and environmental battles over water management policy and operations for decades. Whatever storm patterns affect California over the next few years, the political and environmental issues will dwarf the effects of the weather.
A catastrophic weather pattern in the Americas should probably be called something on the order of El Ninio or better yet a Native American storm name :-)

The El Nino is reportedly already out there, and there's supposed to be a "Pineapple Express" coming up from the tropics. If the weather predictions are correct, the West Coast could get clobbered this winter.
While we desperately need the rain (even WA state is in a major drought and wildland fire emergency right now) torrential rains after drought and bad wildland fires will result in tremendous mudslides, which could add to the devastation. This is especially true in areas where developers have put houses in precarious positions on mountains (ala Malibu) or in slide zones (ala Oso WA)...

I've got a Farmers Almanac in my office that I ref occasionally. My dad (76 yrs old) and swears by it. Pretty much spot on a majority of the time. Looks like a lot of us may be in for a interesting winter.

With history as an indication of the severe impacts weather can have across the state, the forecast should cause some concern. It is too bad they cannot get some of that precipitation now.

Environmental regulations mandate that water that would sustain 4.4 million families gets flushed this way, regardless of drought conditions (however, farmers do get penalized during a drought, the environment must come before food). Meanwhile, Governor Jerry Brown just now got around to mandating water conservation among his wealthiest and most loyal voters. It had to be mandated because the wealthy are not conserving anything the way the more agricultural sections of California have been doing for two years.

I'm hearing some Ugly Predictions considering it is an El Nino Year and it is the biggest widest hottest ever. We shall see how the Science translates. Having just returned from the Pacific Northwest I am well aware of the Dry Ground and the Forrest Fires there.

Burroughs Sir based on the information provided I would say you should be aware that there will likely be the possibility of flash flooding and mudslides given that California has been having a severe drought. Depending on your location i.e. if you are on a ridge or if you are in a valley you should prepare yourself accordingly and heed all warnings given by your local authorities. Weather is nothing to mess around with....

CPT (Join to see) Here is the good news. When I moved to California I left a beautiful home back in Castle Rock, CO and I sold all of my earthly possessions. I live in a rented 800 square foot duplex in the "Hood" (just kidding) in the "ghetto" located in the middle of a large valley south of Camp Pendleton with absolutely no water ways close by and no hills within in miles of my little piece of nothing. My Wife and my youngest daughter are the most important things and I've got them covered and protected. I only have one prize possession worth anything and that is my Harley Davison Motorcycle. I'm ready, so no worries for me, but thank you for your concern - noted and appreciated!

Sir, I've lived in Northern CA on and off, college, since I was 10 years old. I've also lived in Lakewood CO. But I always ends up back in the Bay Area. Every year we're told horror stories of the coming weather or lack there of being that we're in a drought. I take it all with a grain of salt. All my possessions are replaceable. Maybe not my truck or motorcycle. There only may be one of those ever in my life. But my family is paramount to me. My wife and son come first. So while I take every news report in stride I still plan for the worst and have strategies in place in case "San Andreas" decides we need new beach front.
