HANAU, Germany (AP) - A U.S. Army sergeant who beheaded his wife's lover and brought the head to her hospital bed so she could see what he had done was convicted of murder Friday.

After the verdict, the victim's mother, Irene Glover of Phoenix, made a brief and tearful statement mourning the loss of her 21-year-old son, Gregory.

"I used to have a spark in my eye and a jump in my step, but now I'm nothing," she said. "A part of me is gone."

Her son died Dec. 7 in a gruesome climax to a lovers' triangle at the U.S. Army base at Fulda in central Germany.

The defendant, Sgt. Stephen Schap, 26, of Baltimore, figured out his wife, Diane, was pregnant by Glover. Schap found Glover at a telephone booth talking to Schap's wife, who was in the hospital with a pregnancy problem.

Schap stabbed Glover 10 to 15 times with a double-edged knife and, witnesses testified, kicked the victim's head off. He then stalked away carrying the head, saying sarcastically, "And he said he was sorry."

Diane Schap, 26, also of Baltimore, testified Wednesday that her husband came into her hospital room with Glover's head and said: "Look, Diane, Glover's here. He'll sleep with you every night, only you won't sleep at night."

About six months pregnant, she testified her husband told her he had studied and planned the killing and did it because he loved her.

A jury of four officers and three non-commissioned officers deliberated less than two hours before reaching the guilty verdict. The judge, Lt. Col. Charles E. Trant, said he would instruct the jury to impose the mandatory life sentence when the court went back into session Saturday.

Schap's defense argued in vain for a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter on grounds he was in an irrational rage when he killed Glover.

Defense lawyer David Court said in his closing argument Friday that Schap was so devoted to his wife that he had a vasectomy three years ago after she had three miscarriages and he did not want to cause her more pain.

While the SGT's actions may have been just a tad extreme, I definitely can't blame him for being upset about the adultery and pregnancy!

Jody got what he deserved. If you're brave enough to fuck another man's wife, then you're brave enough to pay the consequences. No rocket science there.

The piece of shit cheating wife didn't get what she deserves though.

Feel extremely sorry and bad for the honest, loyal and faithful husband that had to experience this, and has to live with it in the worst place ever.

i believe exactly what i stated above. just because something is legal doesn't make it right. you're question about sharia law is absurd and moronic. leads to me think you have probably cheated on one if not more women in your life.

I'm not going to lie, I sympathize with Schap's rage ... and that was a pretty cool non-sequitur when he dropped the head off. We're forgetting something in our righteous indignation about adultery: Schap killed another service member and paraded part of the body around like a trophy to make a statement.

What he did was morally reprehensible, regardless of how sympathetic his motivations. If your spouse cheats on you, divorce them. If the party they're cheating with is another Soldier, report it to their chain of command. If someone stomps on your heart; pick it up, dust it off, and cut them out of it forever. Really, this isn't in line with the values of who we're supposed to be as Soldiers. (But, again, badass quips.)
