Expect a decent culture change. Some NG units are as high tempo as they come and some are full of dirt bags. Just understand you can’t change a unit or a units mentality instantly. If you enter a unit as a senior NCO from active duty and push to hard it’s going to rub people the wrong way. Gotta weed out the dirt bags over time. Don’t tolerate or conduct non military behavior, however; understand that if your assigned unit is a little lower on the list, they’ve been like that for a while and a huge culture shift instantly won’t help anyone. But good luck brother.

Well Devil be prepared for the culture shock for sure. However, it will be ok. OK NG is a close group of dudes and will take care of you like in the Corps. All in all it's what you make of it. Email me if you have any other questions brother. [login to see]

It's definitely a culture shock. I entered the National Guard when people were calling each other by their first names. I was also there the first morning to take a PT test and I was amazed at the number of people that did the bare minimum in all of the events of the PT test. They'd pump out the number of pushups required to get a passing score and then be done, even if they had 1:30 still to go. But like everyone else has said, don't try to go in there and change everything on day one. Simply set the standard, especially for those in your team/squad and work with them to follow that. My team in the NG set the standard for the rest of the unit after I'd been with them a few months, and command took notice.
