If I see an officer sitting down outside, do I salute him?

I'm at Camp Pendleton in the 52 Area, SOI, and I see a 1st Lieutenant sitting at one of the tables outside the MCX, I walked around because I didn't know if I was supposed to salute him. I tried to seem as little as possible like a shitbag, I don't know if it worked though.

Unless you see a sign that says "No Headgear, No Salute Area" go with the old traditional thinking of "When in doubt, whip that salute out."

Also its better to be correct for rendering a salute when not needed than to be corrected for not saluting, especially as a private.

Haha you certainly can, one of the best ways to break in a new LT is being super inconvenient with salutes. When we walked to chow and saw him coming we would space out to about 10 paces and each salute him. You can also salute one whos sitting, they may or may not stand and return it but its up to them.

Well considering he was a 1st LT, he would not be very "new" but a butter bar i would see that from...As most 1LT's I have known are XOs or FDOs. But , yes i agree on the second part of your statement...Also i would add that customs and courtesy would be for him to stand and return the salute.

SPC Darren Coffenberry - True, I only meant new in the sense of new to our unit though, not freshly minted 2nd LTs.

If you recognize him as an officer, then you render a salute unless as it has been stated you are in a no salute area like the rifle range.
