I served close to half my career under presidents I thought were useless. The good thing is whoever is in will be gone in 4 years (8 max) . You serve your country, not a president. If you are so politically invested in a certain party that it is going to affect you ability to do your duty than perhaps you should resign.

If I can serve under Clinton, you can serve under Trump.

I think it is more honorable to serve your country. The military doesn't serve at the pleasure of the President. I do not agree with most of what President Obama has done especially with regards to the military but that has not stopped nor will it ever stop me from serving.

If the American people elect him, he's our President... resigning isn't going to change that. As for what's honorable, protecting and defending this great nation and her constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic will always be the honorable thing to do and I don't see how resigning will serve that objective.

We serve the nation and the constitution, not the President. Resigning in protest to a President being elected is counter to everything that we do.

Sir, the question is 99% hypothetical and rhetorical - more to the concept of honorable service than Trump specific - he's just a catchy example. And it really wasn't about resigning in protest, per se, but resigning when / if the nation and it's leadership values are no longer in line with the values that people join to serve under.

We persist. A military that can defend the constitution is even more important when political leadership is incapable of doing so.

You took an oath the protect and defend the Constitution and obey the orders of those appointed over you.  Just because you may not like the person or think they are a good leader, doesn't make it right to resign and get out.
Now, if your contract is up then, the choice is all yours.

Sir, a lot had already gave great insight. Why get out, when most of us serve for other purposes, not who's the POTUS?

P.S. There are trolls here, unfortunately, like Captain Miller.....

I agree, there is a lot of good insight, if you can sift through the rubble of a thousand broken dreams. But, like I said the point was really supposed to be towards finding a line in the sand where the leader, or the nation, is no longer honorable and therefore, no longer worthy of service.

However, I am amazed by the backlash in support of a candidate who is brazenly bigoted, who say that *I'm* disrespectful and at the same time absolutely, and without question disrespect the current elected President. The irony and hypocrisy is almost overwhelming.

Well, honestly I find that leader to be in the current POTUS, under which my entire enlistment was. I didn't agree with him (although I voted for him the first time), but didn't ever think of not serving because of him. Obviously, what has transpired in the last several years was gradual, and I wasn't as informed, aware and "burnt" by the degradation of our society, meaning if things were different, who knows...

All this crying over Trump possibly being elected as president? If we all did ok under Obama's "leadership", it will be nothing worse than Trump. Even though I do not agree with some of the statements he makes, he's the asshole this country needs. He's a master at business, he's obviously not doing it for the money, he's got plenty of that. All we can do as a nation is hope for the best outcome and prepare for the worst. Either way, Major, he's still going to be YOUR president if elected, serving or not.

Is our call to service determined by who the the commander in chief is? That never occurred to me.
