Just submitted package for OCS in Navy Intel or Information Warfare. The board convenes in September. I'm also 3 weeks from getting MBA. Hopefully I get selected. Any other advice you can give me in order to EXCEL?
PS: I'm not just planning to get commission as mediocre candidate. I want to shoot for top graduate. Talk to me!

Seek advice from those you wish to emulate as well as those you never want to be like.

Oh boy is this true... I've avoided some real pitfalls by knowing who NOT to copy.

One of my former Leading Petty Officers stressed that to me - you can learn as much from a bad leader as you can from a good one. And BOY did I learn a lot from my chief at the time. -_-

I'm going to buck the trend and plant a bit of a bug in your ear. If I were you, I'd wait. It's not that being an officer is bad, but rather that you're close to making chief. One of my biggest regrets is not having made chief - and it's not something I can go back and do anymore.
It's fine if you want to commission rather than putting on the anchors, but I'd give it some thought.
No matter where you go, once you get your bars, expect it to be a different world. But also expect, as a mustang, to be a bit outside the world. The age different does complicate things, sometimes.
Fortunately for me, the community I just was picked up into (AMDO) seems to be partly an old-folks home for those of us who aren't ready to get out yet. You may want to give it some thought. I'm sure CDR Haas wouldn't mind a take-charge mustang.

Sir, I just picked up 1st. I thought to go for Chief, but I'm 36 and don't have many programs to qual for. I actually do desire intel officer field.
I also look at it this way: I'll be in a leadership position regardless whether I'm a chief or officer. Might as well get paid as such along with better retirement options. Ultimately I'm not just doing for the money, but for the love of God and country, and if I have an opportunity to make more money as a result, why not?
By the way I miss Charleston so much! My 1st assignment 04-07. Loved the city and loved every minute of it!

Yeah, that would make a difference. I just barely squeeked in under the "commission by 35" rule for commissioning from the outside.

Sounds like you are way ahead of the game PO1 Dronzin, especially with the MBA in hand, congrats! Best of luck to you with the board!!

Not for long though SSG Ed Mikus, remember, I'm static. Give PO1 (Join to see) a few years with his hard charging attitude and it may very well come to fruition!
