I have requested assignment for Eglin AFB. What should I expect?

I'm a 35F, with blown knees. I don't know if I'd pass an ABN Physical. However, I requested assignment for Eglin AFB. As far as I'm tracking, the only Army units stationed there are 7th SFG (A), and a Ranger training element. It has been brought to my understanding, that supposedly 7th has a MICO that doesn't require ABN qualification. I don't quite believe this to be true as the unit is an ABN unit. I'd love to get out there and try anyway. My main questions are; How likely am I to obtain assignment there, not being ABN? If assigned, where would I likely wind up? Would I face "friction" for not being ABN Q'd? What is the quality of life on Eglin? Is it difficult to obtain housing?

If I get afforded the opportunity, I’ll jump in a heartbeat, SSG. I just have concern that I may not be able to pass the physical.SSG(P) (Join to see)

SPC (Join to see) oh, excellent! Well then pardon the aggressive nature of my post, there’s a lot of heart and passion for the regiment though. I’m not sure how far along thE PCS process you are, but one option I’d explore is to go to Airborne school TDY en route, that way you can complete all of your pre Airborne stuff at your current unit, and arrive at your new unit ready to roll! But at least request an airborne physical prior to PCSing. I believe they are good for 12 months? That way if anything is identified prior to you PCSing as a medical concern, you can tackle it right away, and get the appropriate care and recovery in a timely manner.
Stay sharp, Good luck!

Thanks, SSG. That brings me to a good question. Do you think it’s possible to request a physical even without having orders or assignment instructions? That way I can confirm I have the chance?SSG(P) (Join to see)

SPC (Join to see) that’s up to your primary care provider/PCM/PA. Every unit/post has their own stipulations for what circumstances they will allow you to get certain medical assistance. For ranger/SF/packet school physical, it’s a requirement before you can even submit for a school date. The question is likely better directed through your NCO support channel or your aid station (since they schedule for your PA)

If you are requesting this through a reenlistment then the current requirements are 100 GT and secret clearance, which you should have. When you get to your assignment you will be expected to attend Airborne school, but technically not required. Expect everyone to give you shit for being a leg and not being willing to attend Airborne school. Where the 7th SFG compound is located you will want to live at Crestview instead of staying on post. If your spouse is working as well you might consider Okaloose Island or Fort Walton Beach area which are closer to the water and you get a much smaller house. You won't want to live on Eglin. It has some of the oldest housing around and the Air Force is like having the most nit picking HOA around. Your 1SG will get an angry email if you don't mow your grass.
You can remove the 75th Ranger tag from your post. The element down there is the Florida phase of Ranger School and is a TRADOC school. I don't even remember them having an S2 while I was there.

Hello SFC,
I really appreciate this post. In terms of ABN School, do you think there's a chance I can still get qualified? I have been put onto a permanent profile and have been pretty upset as to what limits it may apply to my future career.

SPC (Join to see) I don't know what your permanent profile is. But if you can run 5 miles at a 9 minute mile and wear about 100 pounds of chute and gear, then you should be able to pass.

Short answer, yes, there are a few non airborne slots at 7th. The long answer, as one has already mentioned, is that you should volunteer for airborne duty and get your airborne physical, and then work on getting assigned to group.
Coming here with blown knees doesn't help the unit, as your impairment will be a burden that others will have to pick up for you. Get healthy first, then work on trying to get attached to a group.
