From the veterans and soldiers resource website WarriorLodge.com, here is an article on mentorship where I offer the value of being a better mentor as a way to become a better leader.

I guess it depends who you ask. I would like to think both are a value for each. I will say as the end of my first enlistment came close I was just looking to getting out and said I would never do that again only to find myself six years later coming back in a hating the fact that I wasted six years when I could be retired by now. I try to learn as much as I can for knowledgable Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, Navy, & even Coast Guardsmen & depart wisdom to all those who will listen.

I am constantly mentoring my Soldiers but unfortunately do not always take car of myself.
I have many of my Soldiers and former Soldiers who always contact me for advice and that is an Awesome Feeling.

I guess you could say that I am loosely mentored LTC (Join to see), Sir. What I mean is that I ask for advice on situations here and there.
As far as my career is concerned I do a bunch of reading and have had the opportunity to sit in conferences on where the Military is going and what should be done to try and remain competitive.

In my opinion SSG (Join to see) you are doing your part. As far as receiving mentoring, how often do you reach it with a "just checking in" email to an old boss whose opinion you often found helpful? It is has always been easier to serve in the mentor role for someone with whom I have maintained some level of communication. Even if you don't ever get one or two solid mentors, work hard to make sure you are the best mentor to those whom you lead.
