My packet was submitted yesterday to be reviewed by legal for my chapter 5-17 Separation, I have been told this is the last step in the process, any ideas on how long this step takes?

Unfortunately, the answer to your question is "as long as it takes."

So many factors affect the review, it is impossible to give a concrete timeline. How much paperwork is in the packet? Has legal seen it before and this is a re-do? Has legal been involved the entire time? How controversial are the statements and assessments? Are you fighting this? What did the Commanders recommend? How much does legal have on their plate right now? What guidance have they been given for priorities? How well staffed is the legal team? How experienced are they with 5-17s? What is their SOP? What BDE Commander guidance shapes this process for your unit? What higher level guidance shapes the process for your unit? How motivated is the unit to keep you or get you off their books?

And that is just off the top of my head.

All that being said, generally, as long as everything is in order, in my experience legal review for a chapter packet USUALLY takes around five business days, give or take a couple days. But, as I said above, there is a LOT that goes into the actual timetable.

Just curious what a Chapter 5-17 is. Being a Marine I am unfamiliar with some of the Army talk. Always interested in learning something new every day though! (That's what I always tell my students, "You learn something new every day even if you don't realize it!")
