So I work in a BN S3 shop as a "Battle Captain" here in GTMO, and as of late I'm finding it really hard to stay motivated when comming into work and completing tasks. I'm not saying I just blow stuff off and push it away, I complete the tasks that I am given and perform my duties, but it's getting pretty mind numbing. Without getting into specifics the whole shop pretty much is the same way. Morale is extremely low for most people, and I don't see it getting better any time soon? So does anyone have any good tips/suggestions that could help?

In addition - do you have the desire to take on-line college courses to keep you busy?

I always told myself IT'S NOT ABOUT ME! Its about the Soldiers over, under, and around me. I did take college courses, and when I was a PSG, made all of my Soldiers enroll in E-Army U. Many of my Soldiers enrolled and took college courses as a result. As a leader I always encouraged my subordinates to take college courses. This also motivated me to continue to take courses, even if it was only one. I am only three classes from finishing my BSAST.

Sir without knowing more about your specific situation, my observation would be that the mission has become routine and without challenge. Is it possible to begin cross training into other specialties in the same shop? Or even cross training in other collocated shops? A new intellectual demand may bring folks around by requiring them to be more involved and focused. Cross training is always a great career development tool as well.

You may also try an off duty team builder that is completely unrelated to everybody's primary duties.

Great advice.  Twelve hour shifts as a Battle Captain are pretty mind numbing no matter where you are!

I didn't want to dive into specifics because I didn't want it to sound like I just posted the question to complain.

Sir, no worries. My interpretation was that you were seeking some solid leadership advice for a difficult situation; nothing more or less. It has happened to us all at some point during our careers. Mind numbing is the military way...;-)

I would echo Major Apticar's comments. I cranked out my first master's degree as a diversion from the real world by taking a class or two at a time. It was a great personal morale booster for me, and a number of my subordinates got onboard with taking some college classes as well. Was a good thing altogether.

Sir,
Has your situation improved? Has any changes been made to off duty activities or official duties? I worked Low Observables in the AF and had a lot of morale issues in the shop I was in. I can offer up a few suggestions but they may not apply in your situation.
