How do you request for schools if your command doesnt offer any? For instance anything that would go toward mil ed or badge schools.

Don't jockey for any courses so you can get a badge. It's not about badges. It's about training you completed. Some of the Army's most impressive courses don't award a badge.

An addendum, there's all kinds of crazy schools out there that guys want to go to, but often they're neither in an MOS that substantiates the training nor are they in a unit whose METL requires those courses. When I hear soldiers complain about not getting to go to the "Belgian Arctic HALO Sniper Course" it's usually the guys who aren't pursuing the assignments that course requires. Also, don't submit a 4187 to go to the "Belgian Arctic HALO Sniper Course".

I would say it depends on your unit. We all know about the 4187 but alot of times it doesn't leave the company area. Its very hard especially at your rank. You need to find a NCO with some pull in your S-3 shop or go hang around the schools guy. I have found in my career when you deal with folks at Battalion it always pays to know people. Its sad that the Army is that way, but its true. Trust me I have been there as a young Soldier and as a Team Leader and Squad Leader trying to get my guys to courses like CLS and Field Sanitation, anything I could do for them to get points, or further there military education. It sucks but thats just the way it is sometimes. Good luck to you, I would say to re-enlist for a school. I know 1st Cavalry Division at one time was offering an Airborne or Air Assault School incentive if you chose to re-enlist for 4 years and stay at Fort Hood. Well this guy here did that, and was told that I could not go to Airborne School because we were getting ready to deploy again, and there wasn't enough time. It sucks man, alot of times schools are just the luck of the draw. Good luck to you though!

SSG Morgan hit some good points, a lot of times it is the right place right time. Local Troop schools are always easy to get into as long as your unit leadership doesn't mind sending you for a week or two but for the other schools like Ranger sometimes you can control the opportunity by requesting assignment with 75th or communicating with your branch manager or the Ranger LNO/Branch Manager. More often than not it's your location, example at Fort Hood we have Air Assault School and if you were here you could go. Other duty stations and assignments open different opportunities but it's up to you to have the level of fitness needed to pass the school. A good course of action is to try and complete one to two schools a year be it CLS, Field Sanitation etc because by the time your a 1SG like me you have the training and experience to share with your subordinates on those additional duties, this build your leadership characteristics.

The only time i found it hard is if you are on a Special Duty Assignment, i was with DCS (Defense Courier) and found it very difficult to get that done. I even networked with other units out here in Germany that were more then willing, but the COC would not allow it for, well they just didn't seem to think it was necessary, for the fact the AF could not attend, if they could not attend there classes why should we…After battling that for almost a year and a half it was pointless to bring it up. But as the 1SG said its all about who you know. But then the simple classes like CLS, Combative's as such we still couldn't do. just my 2 cents..Good luck my man..

DA 4187. Reenlistment options is a better bet if you keep getting denied. These career counselors can move mountains sometimes. I had many a troop hold out for Airborne & Air Assault. Timing is another consideration. No harm in contacting the school directly and finding out what their "lighter" months are.
