How do we professionalize our force using tools found outside of the service?

I am looking for an exchange of ideas on the creative ways you professionalize your formations using training, tools, mentors from outside of the military in these times of reduced funding and the shrinking of the force.

Sir,
I have been to many military schools and I have learned plenty of new tricks from those instructors. I think mentors from other than Army classes and the Commanders Leadership Development Programs can help tremendously.

1SG, do you know if they are working towards modifying NCOES to include degree producing accreditation at the senior levels?

That has been implemented at the Sergeants Major Academy, the problem I think lies between the level in which senior NCOs work ie: echelons above BDE. NCOs do not receive proper training for those specif levels however their counter parts have been through their Career Course, ILE, and the War college by the time their in those commands NCOs are not that lucky they have either been "On the Line" or maybe some BN Staff job. So the point I am trying to make is the only school we have in place is Battle Staff not a bad course but it doesn't bring us Seniors up to speed.
Just my thoughts.

Truly this is one place I think the military can do a better job. As leaders I think we want to see those who are obviously tactically competent, but also academically competent. At the senior levels in command teams we delve more into policy and strategic thinking/decision making.

One way, sir, is with a solid professional reading program. I have found this to be a great way to discuss just about any (and every) aspect of the military, leadership, tactics, etc. (the list could go on and on).
Some units where I have served had great professional reading programs -- the commander would even assign an individual to make a presentation about the book or a part of the book. I've also seen field trips coupled with professional reading (to battlefields, for example). I vote for a strong professional reading program to professionalize the force.

I have done all of that as well. Battlefield tours are great and allow units to visualize what they have learned or read about. I am also a strong believer of professional reading as well and incorporate it as often as possible.
