How could the Navy ships captured by Iran both lose navigation and communication capabilities at the same time?

CDR Kenneth Kaiser I hope we get some answers on all these, I know there's an investigation ongoing. My guess is this was a combination of over-reliance on electronic charts (never happened before, see USS Guardian), overconfidence, improper fuel management, and an overall lackadaisical attitude that's clearly evident in the videos the Iranians released.

It's not the socks, it's the overall attitude displayed in the videos and the pictures. Socks might be a symptom, but they really gave the Iranians a great deal of propaganda value with the way they acted.

It's not necessarily all their fault, they're obviously completely untrained and unqualified to be doing operations in that part of the world.

SN Greg Wright - I am with you Senior Chief, we didn't have electronic charts on PBRs, hell we had trouble fitting the crew on. It was hard to stay out of someone's line of fire. I know much later in my life we were looking at putting some sort of situation awareness display on a boat with stuff to monitor fuel and engine state and enemy or suspicious positions that sort of thing. But the vibration was too much. Hard to read. Maybe some day.

PO1 Pete Sikes, what kind of force were they up against? Did they have a chance of defeating/escaping that force? What were their rules of engagement?

Yeah, if you screw up and cross into another country's territorial waters, you don't necessarily get to shoot them when they come out and query you. There's rules for this sort of thing.

Here is my issue with this whole scenario. Yes first reports are almost always false but to give up all your weapons and secret equipment and surrender when you're a member of the worlds most powerful Navy is bullshit. The OIC should be stripped of his leadership power and made a desk jockey for the rest of his time! I believe there is a such thing as the CODE OF CONDUCT! The OIC should've asked for a Tow out of territorial waters or asked them to call for help but to just give up like that made the United States Navy look like a bunch of weak ass clowns!
