Honest answer? The media needs to stop "advertising" them.
These are NOT criminal acts. They are "Mental Health" or "Terrorist" acts. Let's assume they are not Terrorist for a moment. If they are "Mental Health" then the specific subset of violent person who is doing this, is "attention seeking" and the Media is exacerbating this.
The media needs to stop that. They are pouring blood in the shark infested waters.
Stop advertising any kind of name, or "count," or weapon, etc. Just knock it the hell off.

Seems like blaming the media for reporting of crime is a bit like blaming the flies for the presence of trash. Who is to decide which crime the media is allowed to report and which it isn't? I don't think the answer to violence is censoring the media.

LTC Yinon Weiss Not blaming the media for the "crime" itself, but I believe they exacerbating this issue.
These events are less "criminal" than "medical" and as such we need to approach them that way. We don't let the Media report "Medical" Information because it violates Privacy concerns. It's a Conflict of Rights. The Press' Right to exist vs. the Individual Rights.
When we are talking about events of this nature, I believe that is what is at play here.
If these were "criminal activities" it would be a different story. But I really don't think that is what these "mass shootings" are. Singular shoots are one type of "Event" (Criminal), usually, whereas Mass Shootings lean towards another type of "Event" (Terrorism or Mental Health [Medical])

LTC Yinon Weiss, Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS, Rather than view it as censorship I'd view it as sensationalism vs. discretion. We make the mass-killers into celebrities and the victims in to nameless counts. This makes mass-killers do grotesque things like make scorecards.
I wouldn't advocate government intervention in the reporting, but would urge media to consider their desired out come and how to achieve it.

Capt Richard I P. Absolutely. I'm in no way advocating "legislation" more of a "self police" model (a la Movies, Music, Video Game ratings), like we do with "name of victims" etc.
They're essentially "selling" (profiting from) this information, and there needs to be a line. I don't know how wide that line needs to be... but "don't give them ideas" is my line of thought.

SN Greg Wright Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS Aaron nailed it!
The Press needs to not even use the name of the 'shooter', just Dumba$$ or Person X.
If the MSM stops hyperventilating the will remove the incentive for notoriety.
