Absolutely, SPC Mark Beard! The SFTG instructors at Camp Mackall made us come to attention and sing it every morning on the days we were in a classroom setting! April-May, 1970. The song was a number one hit in 1966.

SPC Mark Beard, I visited the grave of SSG Barry Sadler at the Nashville National Cemetery on 6APR13. SSG Sadler (November 1, 1940 - November 5, 1989) was an American soldier, author, singer and songwriter. SSG Sadler served as a Special Forces combat medic with the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and is most famous for his song, the "Ballad of the Green Berets". Requiescat in pace.

Yes. Rest in Peace. Didn't have to a cappella that one @ Mackall; but, out in Uwharrie the "G-Chief" insisted that it be sung to him (along with other character-building requests). Was still in Junior High at the time but recall on-air DJ's on WABC and WMCA (the Good Guys) intro-ing the song with the preface: "it's #1 with a bullet" - actually a common industry phase to reflect a chart-climber or topper - but even more appropriate w/that song.

It was my favorite song when it came out while I was in Vietnam. All us guys that were Airborne used to sing it to drive the legs crazy. (-:

I remember hearing this song in the 1970s when I was still single digits old, but in the early 80s as I was entering my teens I saw the movie at the 'Club with my Armor/Cavalry Father.
Of course I bought the movie as soon as I could (VHS) and then introduced it to my wife and soon to my kids!
