For example the thin blue, red, green or other modifications to "Old Glory" . Is this okay or should another flag be used instead?

If I'm reading your question correctly, you want to add something to an existing, real US flag. If that's the case then according to the US Code, I would say no.

"The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature."

Nor should it ever be used for advertising.

"The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever."

There are plenty of other flag versions already out their supporting the other thin lines. I'd recommend leaving Old Glory alone.
