I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Pat Lufrano, a Farmers Insurance Agent based in Northridge, California in order to learn more about his military-focused nonprofit. I had the privilege of working with Pat on a few community facing events from a media relations perspective, and it was great to learn more about him and his cause.
Through his nonprofit, Fighting for Families, Pat has helped provide support to members of the military, local veterans, and their families. He frequently gives back to military and veteran communities through generous financial donations, largely for disabled veterans and/or families who have lost their loved one(s) in the line of duty while serving our country.
I was intrigued to find out more about what motivated him. I asked Pat, who is not a veteran himself, what inspired him to help the military and veteran community. His answer was simple and heartfelt: veterans are extremely underserved and they should be treated as our nation’s heroes, but in many circumstances, they don’t get the necessary credit they deserve.
I was moved by his response for two reasons. First, I am a veteran of the US Army and I’m extremely passionate about giving back to the military community. It gives me a great sense of pride to see someone who respects the dedication and commitment of those who serve our country. Second - something that really stuck with me – was his passion and matter-of-factness about instilling an overall paradigm shift regarding helping members of the military, veterans, and their families more.
Having worked with Pat, I know firsthand that his charity is slowly but surely creating that paradigm shift one veteran and one family at a time. For example, he gives back in a big way through an annual golf tournament called the Fighting for Families Charity Golf Tournament, which raises money to help local veterans and their families. Just this year alone, they were able to provide $25,000 and a new car to a young military veteran who lost her husband while he was serving overseas. Her husband was in Afghanistan and she was on leave, pregnant with their first child. She was struggling to maintain a job and care for her son because she did not have reliable transportation. In the long term, Pat wants to be able to help multiple veterans like her every year through his organization and, ultimately, reinforce to military veterans and their families that they are not alone and that there are people out there who appreciate and care about them.
Through Pat’s continual commitment, he continues to make lifelong changes, while honoring those who have served our country and ensuring their families are cared for. Pat is humble and doesn’t do any of this commendable work for the recognition. I personally hope Pat understands the lasting impact he’s making for military veterans and their families. I know I have.
