Israel
I want to see Netanyahu win the election. I understand from watching coverage of the election on CNN that a coalition needs to be built and that it may take days or weeks before it's all said and done.

I think Netanyahu is who Israel and the USA need to be in charge in Israel -- not a left-winger who wants to "make nice with" (read, appease) the Arabs.

What do you think? Does it matter who wins the Israeli election? Do you care? Do you think it will impact us?

Thomas Jefferson said "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations-entangling alliances with none."
I think that the elections in any country should be the sole prerogative of that nation. Too many times when outside forces get involved in a sovereign nation's business lines become blurred between independent nation and de facto colony. why should we the United States of America be a foreign nation's strong arm? Israel is more than capable of defending themselves and making policy for their people without outside intervention. We only can receive second knowledge of the real fight or the ground truth and depending on who you speak this will always be skewed.

I agree to a point, SSG (Join to see), especially your comment about colonies, but I still think who's in charge in other countries is of interest to the USA and important. I'm not sure Israel would be as strong as they are without our friendship and support. That's obviously important.

And the fact that Netanyahu won is important on the world stage because our administration was (I believe) really hoping he would lose. That makes for some interesting foreign policy discussions and challenges.

Only until he wins. Then he'll go back to being the warmonger he is.

Yeah, just found out. I still don't trust him remotely. For decades he has obstructed the peace process, sabotaging any talks by refusing to be a reasonable negotiator. I don't believe he has truly had a change of heart.

I'm with you. I don't think America realizes how important this outcome is to the free world.

Because of how much power they have over our government, yes it is important who wins their elections. Netanyahu has been a disastrous war monger for decades now and a complete roadblock to any sort of peaceful negotiations. Worse off he wants to drag us into a war. I think people want us to support Israel for the wrong reasons, religious reasons, instead of because they are a good, sound strategic ally. But since they are, it would be best if a reasonable, responsible, level headed leader, rational leader took over.

I don't think that our support for Israel has any thing to do with religion. Israel is a strong ally for the very reasons you mentioned. Good, sound and strategic and a dam brave group of people. It's to bad that we don't have the kind of guts they have in this country. We might just be able to drain that dam festering cesspool in DC.

I've talked to many that justify our unrelenting devotion to Israel with religious reasons, which is an unacceptable basis for foreign policy. If we are to remain allies with Israel, it should be for the right reasons only. I wouldn't mind our support of them if they elected a rational leader that wasn't so obsessed with "winning" over actual peace.
