MILPER 15-191 just came out (on the 1st), announcing a MAJ/LTC board for duty as a Professor of Military Science at one of 60 schools. Suspense for applications is *** 8 July ***. Open to MAJ/LTC AC or AGR.

My good deed for the day is done. Remind me sometime to share my views of making these slots only open to AC...

COL Vincent Stoneking - My assignment as an ROTC Instructor was one of the best of my career. I enjoyed it immensely and felt like I contributed much to the cadets I taught and mentored.

Many of my former cadets communicated with me for many years following their commissioning and I even had four of them attend my brigade change of command in Korea.

I strongly recommend it.

Sir,

Sounds like you actually made a positive impact on your cadets. I wish I could say the same about mine. The only one that actually cared about helping me progress was the individual that got promoted into Command. The other two PMSs were lacking in leadership development and neglected to assist cadets not wanting to enter combat arms units.

CPT (Join to see) - I took my ROTC assignment as serious as any other assignment and treated my cadets like I would have treated my soldiers (my wife says, like my kids). I took a personal interest in their development and followed their careers after graduation. I taught them things that were outside the approved Cadet Command POI. For example, I purchased all MS III/IV cadets a copy of "The Army Officers Guide" and held voluntary after-hours classes, using it as the textbook, after quickly realizing that cadets were being commissioned without basic information about being an officer in the Army (customs and traditions, wear of the uniform, Army posts and assignments, pay and allowances, PCS moves and entitlements, etc., etc.). Nearly 100% of the cadets (and many of the spouses and fiancés) attended.

Being a PMS can be rewarding but it also challenging. ROTC is not a vacation away from a line unit as there are plenty of weekends and summer camps going on. I am fortunate to work for a good PMS but I do see the challenges he faces. Good luck to those who want the privilege of shaping the Army's future leadership.
