A friend asked this to the GI bill benefits help desk.

Good afternoon and apologies for the late response.First, to answer your question, the 4 months, even though it is part time, is still counted as 4 out of the 36 months. So if you checked ebenefits after you finish a semester, it would say 32 months remaining even though you only went part time. Assuming you are eligible for 100% of your Post 9/11 benefits, it would be most beneficial for you to take the full-time amount of credits at your school if possible. Please try using our New Gi Bill Calculator, http://newgibill.org/calculator/ , to see how much more money you could be receiving.

Best,

Gerard

Friend

I am going to school part time at a community college (6-9 credit hrs). I am being paid the part time BAH rate. Does 4 months (16 weeks) at part time, say 9 credit hours (75%), use 4 of the 36 months of benefits or does it use 75% of those for months which is 3 months of benefits?

It uses 4 months of the G.I. Bill. If you take one class over a two month period then you've used two months of your benefit. If you take 4 classes over a two month period, you've still used only two months of your benefit. i do agree that it seems like the service-member is getting screwed over.
