Looking into this special missions aviator position, seems awesome! I'm currently a c130 crew chief, I love flying and learning more everyday how acft work! Wondering if there are any crew chiefs out there that got tired of hearing "hey chief" and started saying it instead??

I started out as E/E and then retrained into Flight Engineer and went to Helicopters. When the merger with gunners happened I became a SMA. I will tell you for a fact that you DO NOT have to be prior aircrew to retrain into this career field. If you have any questions, please feel free to look me up on the Global and I can answer any questions that you have.

Do it! I've seen quite a few crew chiefs make the jump and never look back. The only ones that I've seen have issues are 60 chiefs going to 60s, but it was an attitude and lack of humility issue. Which airframe are you looking at?

Yeah I was looking into doing it but I have a buddy that is in his cross train window and we aren't allowed to cross train into that job without being prior aircrew. We're Kc-135 crew chiefs so its going to work the same for I'm sure all the crew chiefs no matter what airframe. But yeah we can't cross train to it unless we're aircrew already. I mean you could cross train into flight engineer. I have a buddy that did that and he likes it.

Sounds like whoever fed you that line is full of shit. SMAs are short everywhere and there is nothing saying you have to be prior aircrew.
