Being that the Navy and Coast Guard are both on ships, are the ratings the same and are the schools similar?

There are a ton of similarities, (rank and many ratings) but of course a lot of differences. They are culturally as similar as any of the two services, but each has their own uniqueness.

The ratings are adapted to the Ships. In the Navy, a Boatswains mate is somewhere in that whole crew crowd over there, in the Coasties, a Bosun is the Boss.

My adopted Dad was a Coast Guard BM 1 but that was during WWII when they actually were combined with the Navy and I have a nephew who just retired as a Coast Guard Chief but I never asked too many questions about what was different. During WWII Dad served in Europe, N. Africa and the north sea but during peacetime they have a lot of different things like search and rescue and drug enforcement. They also do boat inspections and things like that. They stopped me several times in the Gulf of Mexico and checked my life perservers, fire extinguishers etc. Also chewed my ass big time for being several miles offshore without my marine radio working. He was right. That was sort of stupid.

Some coasties do attend Navy schools. Here in Norfolk, CG ETs attend 2M, TACAN, and SPS-40E at our ET Rating C-School. We even have a CG ET1 who works with us. I would imagine that there are also CG sailors who attend the Mk 92 and Mk75 schools, considering that Frigates and Cutters shared the weaponry.

Because they have a need for the training but do not have a force size that would create the demand for the training to justify the cost of establishing a training program when that need could be adequately filled by sending their people to an existing Navy school and filling seats that may have otherwise gone unfilled.

The Coast Guard is notoriously stuffy about recruiting, even from the Navy. I went to boot with a former coastie. He got out with a knee injury, tried to come back when it healed and they sent him our way. As far as I know he is still in.
As for the ratings, yes, many are the same (or similar). I understand that a lot of them cover more than one of our rates (fewer different rates), and they have a few extras, such as ME (Maritime Enforcement).
