I have a referral to Andrew's AFB to get Lasik eye surgery. For the surgery, since I'm not stationed near there, I have to stay on lodging during and after the surgery. Does anyone know if I'm entitled to Per Diem while I'm down there? Any references I can show the budget office here since no one has done this in this unit yet?

So the first article says that if it's an elective procedure Tricare won't pay for per diem...I guess I was hoping to find out if there is something authorizing unit's to pay for it in Tricare's place

I know that I'm in a joint unit and they told me if I got Lasik I would have to go to Peterson AFB (I think one of them in Colorado) because they don't do it here. The eye doctor said that I would get reimbursed or something. Maybe PTDY?

I was thinking it's medical TDY but that's if you're a nonmedical attendant for a dependent and you have to go 100 miles away or more for care. I found that out about my daughter after her second hospital stay.

Have you called the clinic to see if there's a travel representative there? Someone at your base hospital or clinic has to know about this. It's not new. I would check at your clinic or hospital and find out. I swear I was told that I would be put on permissive TDY or something if I wanted lasik and I have to go out of state to get it.

SSG (Join to see) - If your unit/command puts you on permissive TDY then there is no per diem. If your unit puts you on orders, then you'll get travel milage and per diem.

I was on active duty in 94 they told me to report to FT bliss (was stationed @ YPG) they paid travel expenses. I would pose this question to your unit finance clerk

If you are active duty and have a referral for treatment the Army should cut you travel orders to accomplish same. If all else fails, call the medical facility at andrews and ask for the reference.
