Regulations for Paternity Leave within the Army are contained in AR 600-8-10, which provides for paternity leave for natural birth or for adoptive parents. It appears there may be pending legislation introduced by Rep Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) in 2017 to include Foster children, so far they are NOT included. Even if it passes there still is a period before it can be placed in Army Regulations or those Regulations/Instructions from other services. Other services such as the Air Force the policy on leaves and passes is contained in AFI 36-3003. For other guidelines check with Military Medical facilities, Family services or Legal, they may have more complete information (Esp Medical) as they deal with these issues. Presently though the paternity leave applies only to Natural or Adoptive parents NOT Foster Children.

First start talking to your chain of command, being your squadleader...never ever back door them, ask to speak with your First Sergeant, be honest and truthful and tell what is happening.
