I'm a sub guy converting to surface fleet. Will my family come with me? Will I rotate back to the states between deployments/refits?

I will assume that you are referring to FDNF (Forward Deployed Naval Forces) ships. They are Naval ships homebased outside the United States (I don't think the ships out of Pearl Harbor are considered FDNF). I believe there are two bases Sasebo, Japan and Rota, Spain. My understanding is that they are accompanied tours and maintenance is completed on station.

Yes, as https://bloxdio2.com , you are correct in your understanding of Forward Deployed Naval Forces (FDNF) ships.

Forward deployed is essentially an US military base on foreign soil. Whether or not if your family can come with you depends on the location and i'm assuming you're going to NSA-Bahrain?
http://www.cnic.navy.mil/regions/cnreurafswa/installations/nsa_bahrain/about/Sponorship.html this site should have your answer about family - I see a family readiness group, which would lead me to think you could bring your family, but you should read through that site or potentially contact the base/command sponsor for up to date information.

There are LCS that are forward deployed and rotate crews, similar to the way boomers do it. We're talking Guam and Bahrain among other places. When you're on the ship, your family stays in your home port.
What type of ship are you going to? Why are you leaving the subs? I left them in 84 due to an ear injury...

I'm on a disqualifying medication for a sleep disorder.
I just got into a groove on my boat so it's disappointing, but I think I'll try to make a career out of it anyways.
I haven't converted rates yet. I'll submit my choices soon. I think mineman will be first.

I'm sorry to hear about your health problem. I hope it's being resolved with the medication...
What's your current rating? Did you get your dolphins? If you go MN, you'll definitely face forward deployments...

Seeing as you posted this in the Bahrain group I assume you are going to one of the PC's or Minesweepers stationed there. In that case you would be on a rotational crew, switching between a ship in the U.S. and one in Bahrain periodically ( I think it's yearly).
This is different form the ships in Spain or Japan where you are a permanent crew.

Update for this discussion. The MCM are do not rotate crews anymore. You will either be based out of Sasebo, Bahrain, or San Diego. For LCS Minemen then your choices are San Diego or Mayport being assigned to a Mission Module Det. A few other choices for your sea duty would be HM-14, 15 and Expeditionary MCM Dets. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

CPO (Join to see) - So if you get orders to a boat homeported in Bahrain, you'll just remain in Bahrain the whole time and your family will stay in San Diego?

PO2 (Join to see) - As of right now your orders can be accompanied or unaccompanied this is all dependent upon the capability of the base. As I understand they can only support a certain number of families but are looking to expand that. What the difference will make is tour length would change depending upon your family being present.

Forward deployment has been a common strategy for many nations, particularly those with global military commitments or security interests. It has both advantages and challenges. While it can enhance readiness and response capabilities, it can also entail logistical challenges and diplomatic considerations, especially if troops are stationed in foreign territories.

We always referred to forward deployed when we weren't at our normal deployment station. In our helicopter squadron stationed on the carrier, we were deployed on the carrier, but sometimes we had one or two helos on a det on a ship closer to the coast in the Persian Gulf and considered those crews "forward deployed".

Forward Deployed I think are homeported in the US but permanently operate outside of the US.

Hahahahaha I grew up at Clark. Not as wild a Olangapo, but we were all going to bars at 14 and drinking 2 peso beers which is like 10 cents. We sure did a lot of grown up things as kids. I would give my left arm to relive it again! Are you a retiree? I am thinking of Space A travel.
