Being the anniversary of D Day, do you feel the youth of today really understand the true significance?

Hell no. It's just another date to them. I find that even some junior service members don't realize the significance of today. I think a large part of it has to do with the dwindling number of remaining soldiers that served in that time. People recognize Vietnam and Korea more than WWII because we have a generation who lived in that time period. It was on their TVs and in their day-to-day conversation.

I wasn't much interested in history in High School. On November 22, 1963, I learned that history isn;t all in the book, I began to understand i was living in historical history. I became a war buff. In my life I have come across several follows that arrived in Normandy on June 6. They told some tails to wonder about. Also learned about Korea from vets while in ROTC ion High School. It is a shame that kids don't take an interest in the past. Cause by scripture, we are approaching the last War. It is gonna be much worst that WORLD WAR 1 & 2 combined casualties: around 70, 600,000 souls lost. World War 3 will be in the billions. There are over 7 billion+ people alive today. GOD is going to clean house again, as HE did in the time of Noah and Lot. The last ten of so years, it seems that the world is heading that way, and Russia and China and Iran are ready. I don't think the world is ready for their combined might, and possible nuclear weapons involved also. I feel that the world will be caught short again as it was at the beginning of World War 2. I am not being flippant about this subject. This is the way I see what will happen. I don't have any idea when it will start, but I know where it will start. It is mentioned in Zechariah 14:1-19. Confirmed by Joel 3:20. The war itself is covered by Luke 21:8-36 & Luke 17:24-37. Pray for peace fellas. It isn't too late. GOD bless all who are in the active service and reserves. May GOD help our country to survive.

Who says religion and science don't mix? Einstein said that he didn't know what sort of weapons would be used in the third world war, but the fourth would be fought with rocks.

Sgt Hard Philips - The Bibles tells us that fire will be used extensively. Now fire comes in many forms, GOD gave us the knowledge of the atom in the early forties so we could make a bomb for destruction. Man wasn't satisfied with an atomic bomb, so Mr. Teller increase it by using a Hydrogen bomb. GOD help us all. From a 16 kt bomb up to a 60 mt bomb now x all the nations that have the bomb. What do you think that the fire in the Bible is in reference to?

Good question but you may be surprised with how many of our youth today are interested in the WWII generation. I have seen first hand college students who are attending our BC Veterans Events on campus and asking us old veterans tons of questions about our service. Sadly a lot of them had a grand dad or grand uncle who never talked about their years in WWII or Korea and have passed on without leaving behind much about any of their service years.

This is a little encouraging to hear. I know a little of what you are talking about My mothers father served during WWII and didn't talk about it much either. I am the oldest grandson and I was able to request his medals and what we received really surprised the family. I now have his Ike jacket and medals at my house to be properly taken care of their selfless service should never be forgotten.

CSM (Join to see) - I was very surprised last summer to see so many young people attend the candle light vigil Foxboro MA had for the Marines killed in Chattanooga Tenn. We also had a bunch of tough looking bikers there & one of them told me they attend all of these memorial events to make sure there are not any protestors who want to disrupt the ceremonies.

I truly feel that in today's society the true scale and significance of the D-day operation isn't appreciated for what it has meant to the world. Freedom from tyranny. Men making the ultimate sacrifice. It was a great undertaking on so many levels.

Unfortunately they don't due in part to our education system and parenting. I grew up in a family with a rich military tradition going back to the Civil War in America and back to the Napoleonic Wars in Europe, so I was taught the battles and histories and traditions that my ancestors had. When I was in school, very few of my classmates has any knowledge of World War 2 other than the fact that we won it and that Adolf Hitler was a National Socialist. Even after "learning" from our teacher, there was little explanation of the build up to DDay such as Operation Torch or the training of Commonwealth and American service members for the battle. My teacher personally skipped over the importance of the glider and airborne soldiers in securing the beach head. One man I admire very much so, is my Great Grandfather. USA(Dec) TEC5 Thomas Blair served in the 18th Infantry Regiment and as GEN Omar Bradley's personal driver in the European Theatre. I grew up listening to his stories, sometimes not believing what he was saying. His vivid recollections of fighting at Omaha where he earned a Purple Heart and further fighting inland when he earned his CIB and a Bronze Star have shaped me into the soldier and citizen I am today. I learned that without men willing to participate in the largest invasion force ever assembled, that life as we know it may be completely different. Liberties that we take granted would be gone. Freedom of the press, freedom of religion, the right to have fraternal organizations, the right to marry and procreate with whoever you want to. and many others would most likely not be available to us. If we had lost that battle, historians have estimated that a peace treaty between the Western Allies and Germany would have ensued, leaving Germany to fight a one front war instead of a three front war. This heightens their chances of conquering the Russians or beating them badly enough to sue for a peace settlement. It would have allowed more time for German rocket, aero, and nuclear engineers to finish weapons projects that could project the reach of German military might.
