Australia has stopped a planned beheading in their own country. Is this evidence enough to move the West to real action?

The police and intelligence agencies in Australia have stopped an iminent plot to behead random civilians in Australia. If we think this sort of thing can't happen here, we are delusional. Now that they (ISIL) have taken action to bring beheadings and terror to the West, are we going to see action? What should be done? Will this provide emphasis to intelligence agency actions and their necessity WITHIN our own borders? These were Australian civilians being monitored by their own government.

COL (Join to see) Cpl (Join to see) SFC Beau Deacon SSG Maurice P. CW5 (Join to see) PO1 Joseph Silvers SFC Mark Merino - My friends in the Philippines have faced a lot of this kind of thing and while there definitely peaceful elements within the culture and religion. The problem is that these problems there are pervasive and they suffer no illusions but time and again have felt threatened and on the verge of war. I would go there now as a civilian because in spite of the inclement weather, I love the people there.

The problem is that the "peaceful Muslims" aren't policing themselves. Don't want to be branded with a wide stereotype of being a relgion of vicious radical terrorist? Clean up your own house and get the lunatic fringe under control.

It certainly should be. I believe that the thwarted threat in Australia should be an even louder wake-up call on this issue.

I would hope so, Chief. These guys are criminals too, so they are going to go after a soft target. Think the elderly and children. This is going to get a lot worse. Buckle up, folks. You don't need to blow up a skyscraper to be influential.

Law enforcement bulletin warned of ISIS urging jihad attacks on US soil
Islamic State fighters will ramp up their calls on so-called lone wolves to attack members and facilities of the U.S. military in response to American airstrikes, a law enforcement bulletin obtained by FoxNews.com warned last July, a month before President Obama mounted an aerial attack on the terror group.

My sentiments exactly. Attacking Soldiers is a hard target. My home is relatively well armed. I am always paranoid however. Always looking for a fight that is about to happen. The harder a target you appear, the less likely you are to be a target.

Unfortunately most people live with their head in the sand and won't take threats seriously until the unthinkable happens. I've been debating with my more liberal friends about the how illegal immigration is a threat as terrorist could sneak across the border. They poo-poo'd that idea as "it's not a real threat because we've never seen terrorists try it". Oh, I wish I could talk to them now.....

It's not death from above that we have to worry about, or death from without...it's death from within.

Good job Australia. I hope you feed him to the dingos! These whack jobs are just begging for the ROE to be lowered to the point of extermination so they can shake hands with Allah. How does any group rationalize be-headings of random people? This is a crazy world we live in.

We can hope that the threats are being taken seriously and that we are taking action as a national government to counteract them, though there are more and more calls to limit the capabilities of the intelligence gathering branches.

After seeing the first article I had a sit down with my wife and we talked about how this would be seen in America very soon. Then the second article broke. We had to see it coming. if you watch the news there is allot of unrest in America especially the upper mid west. Judging by sheer numbers of people we are talking about, this is definitely a credible threat to me. I will certainly be brushing up on my counter spying techniques (Cold War stuff) which I think is still credible for anti-terrorism... same concepts. Hopefully this wakes some people up.

The Barbary Pirate War is responsible for both the line "...to the shores of Tripoli..." in the USMC Hymn and for the term "leatherneck": Marines under the command of USN LT Stephen Decateur aboard the USS Philadelphia were advised to protect their necks from the Barbars' swords by securing their wide leather belts around their necks to prevent decapitation, the pirates' favorite method for dispatching "infidels" (as they called all non-moslems)...

What is interesting about that incursion, is not that it was successful but that it could be considered a failure as the original objective was never met. As well, there were very few Marines involved in the Tripoli conflict, most of the combatants being tribesmen and mercenaries...

The method of attack is simple. It requires zero overhead. You don't need to drive a plane into a building to be effective.

Agreed look how much press Michael Olumide Adebolajo and Michael Oluwatobi Adebowale received for Murdering Fusilier Drummer Lee Rigby in England. All they used was a car and some kitchen knives.

Nope. Our current leadership won't call a spade a spade. Heck...ISIS isn't even islamic. Can't offend folks...political correctness is far more important that anything else in the world.

There's no doubt that the Islamic State can and does have the ability to reach out to countries far removed from the Middle East. We have seen it throughout the world. From the attacks on 9/11 to bombings in Europe to kidnapping in Asia to violent bloodshed in Africa to attacks in South America. Terrorists will always have the ability to reach out. Should the actions in Australia be a wake up call? Heck yeah they should. Anyone that reads about it and think that we are far removed from what is going on "over there" is just as crazy as those members of the Islamic State. This is a new sort of enemy, one that is willing and capable of reaching in to borders and taking actions against their enemy with little fear.

SGT Ben Keen, Absolutely. 30 years ago we lived in a time of nation state super-powers. Now we live in a time where nations still have power, but can be influenced by super-powered individuals, businesses, and consortiums. It's a dangerous place out there.

Oh so very true. Up to this point, the problems and the enemy were always "over there". Besides the attack on Pearl Harbor, the only successful attacks on US soil were completed by small groups of people trying to make a political statement. Now, those numbers are growing and with that means the threat is growing. Sadly, this translates to a higher death toll as well. The US still remains a powerful country but within our power lays our weakness as well.

The police can't be everywhere and you can't rely on them in an emergent situation. Only hope in that situation is that the authorities and intelligence agencies are working together in this. Real problem is that if someone is willing to die to carry out their attack, they will likely succeed unless they are caught in the planning phase.
