Are you necessarily a "free agent" when you go into the IRR? Does anyone have experience with going into the IRR?

Yes, at least from a USAR point of view, if you're in the IRR, it's a LOT easier for any unit to pick you up (if you want that) than to transfer from wherever you're at when you're not in the IRR.

You are a free agent as far as going into any USAR or RA unit. I believe you still need a conditional release for NG transfers. I can help with any USAR transfer.

no such thing as free agent lol, still a potential candidate for a recall to AD, professionalism still applies so does military bearing. Never been in IRR but to me its common sense behavior.

Maybe I should've provided more background, I've got 14 years ADS and have obviously completed my MSO. I'm actually on T10 orders right now and plan on continuing on that path for another 2 years. For me, it's not a question of staying in service. What I am referring to is if it is easier to get picked up by a command (USAR or ARNG) of my choice rather than the long IST process. If you are not familiar, the ARNG often makes it difficult to transfer and can also be a lengthy process.

If you are Guard looking to transfer, my unit picked up two officers from the Indiana Guard and that is how they did it, Both went IRR, then the Reserve Retention NCO picked them up for our Reserve Unit.
