Excelsior College named best for veterans

As of Nov 11th, 2014, for the fifth consecutive year, Excelsior College was named the “Best for Vets” college by the Military Times, a news organization dedicated to
veterans, their spouses and military families.

The ranking takes into consideration services, special rules,
accommodations and financial incentives for veterans, among others
available programs, and also asks schools to describe their “veteran
culture” on campus, according to a release.

“We factor in what is, to our knowledge, the most detailed school-by-school
data on veteran students’ academic success anywhere, including graduation,
retention, persistence and course completion rates,” said Amanda Miller,
editor of Best for Vets, in a release. “By recognizing only the schools
that do the most, we believe we’re helping to raise the bar in veteran
student services.”

Currently, Excelsior has almost 16,000 students who consider themselves
active-duty or veterans of the military. In the 2013-2014 graduating class,
34 percent were members of the U.S. military.

And though there is no official campus for Excelsior — the college is
strictly online — Excelsior has developed a strong hub in Washington, D.C.
to better reach those looking for education post-military. In recent years,
they’ve continued to release more grants and financial aid for for veterans
and their families, the most recent announcement aiding veterans interested
in earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing. The school is also home to
the Lt. Col. Bryant A. Murray Veterans Center, which offers financial,
educational, advisement and mental health resources to students and alumni.
