I used Libre Office, it's free and better than Open Office in my opinion, but military members can get Microsoft Office 2016 for only $10-$20.

Libre Office comes with a Visio and DB alternative. MS Office does not.

I try to use LO/OO whenever possible.
However having a bazillion MS Office users sort of forces the hand.

SPC Jan Allbright, M.Sc., R.S. Windows is running over 90% of the business computers worldwide. Office goes hand in hand with that. Especially now that Office 365 has deferred some of the cost associated with office.

You have the option, at least in LO, to save/open in MS formats. I'm not too sure about advanced features, but I know basic features transfer quite well.
