I am possibly facing a medical discharge due some health issues. Does a DD-214 show 'medical discharge' on it? I work as a Paramedic on the civilian side and am due to ETS from the guard in about 8 months. I am concerned that my DD-214 will read medical discharge' and limit my chances of getting hired by simply having that on there, even if I can still do the job just as well as most other people... Any input would be appreciated!!

I don't recall a medical discharge on my 214. It shows the schools, medals, and time in service dates.

There will be a code to Identify your discharge. There should be anything that says you were a medically discharged.

You’re good. Your DD-214 will say type of discharge as in “Honorable Discharge”. You will have a code which is a reenlistment eligibility code.

SGT Hansen Paskell - No, it won't say "MEDICAL DISCHARGE" on it. It will only say things like Honorable, General, Less than honorable, Dishonorable, etc. There should be a CODE, which will tell you what the discharge was for. It will be something like a letter and number. It wouldn't mean anything to the average person, but an employer might have a list of what those codes stand for, because of course, they might want to know why you were discharged. It shouldn't be anything to get you dumped off the "call back" pile of applications, though. And, you can always include a letter with your application, stating what your code is for, and what you can still do, etc.

Thanks everyone for the comments! Thankfully I was able to ETS without having to go through a Med Board..

My DD214 has Longevity/ Medical 30% on it. I retired in 2002 so that may have changed by now.
