During a busy Mascal training exercise, my soldier and I were put on separate teams and taskings. His involved getting undressed to PT shorts and a tan Tshirt and climbing into a decon suit. It was pointed out to me by two fellow NCOs that he was wearing a military style tan tshirt with a massive blood drive emblem on the front. The blood drive was one on post that didn't have to do with our unit in particular. After a thorough tongue lashing, his only defense was that the people at the drive said he could wear it in uniform. Is this authorized in any way?

I wouldnt lose any sleep over this event. We do a lot of things that are not authorized by 670-1 but nobody says anything because someone higher blesses off on it. For example cat eyes on PCs, Tabs over the rank on PC, the black hats worn by Airborne Instructors. Unit shirts are the same but generally allowed to try and raise morale and usually worn as part of a dictated uniform. Sounds like this particular shirt was just for one function, now you know and he knows. I wouldnt even do counseling, if we counselled a SM everytime he did something stupid we wouldnt have any time left to run around in the woods doing our jobs.

A long while back when I was on Leave(I’m AF). I was visiting a AFJROTC unit I had been in before going in.. I got invited along to a SAR tng ex. Up in northern Mi. ..
I had a olive tan T that had a screen print of a bunch of “skinnies being chased down by a couple A-10s that were loaded to the gills(on back of the T was the A-10s flying away. .. We were up by Grayling where the National Guard and Reserves train. They were up there also .. A regular clusterflop with all those units .. I had taken my jacket off to show them the ‘T’.. and put it back and fastened the jacket... the restaurant’s a.C unit was not functioning properly. So off my jacket came w/o a thought and I sat and ordered.. eel had to go wash up.. I did that and heard some of graylings commenting as I passed.. a few thought funny, some not so(must been the liberal
Treehugging skinnies loving group).
We finished and got up and left. The Colonel with our group picked up my lunch. We got outside and I put my jacket on.. Some Guard Captain had been approached by the civilians and they said they thought my T was distasteful.and thought they should report it.. So they told the Army Guard Captain..
He seen my rank on my sleeve. (That was wear I was told to put it way back then.). And he came over and strongly suggested I ditch the ‘T’ . When I got back. He didn’t ask where I was assigned.. nada ..
So I figured I was in the Clear.. I wonder if he’d seen my RDF (Rapid deployment Force) patch? Well he did not say anything about it.. a R/MSGT we had did.. he seemed still up on the AF/ Regs/guidelines ..
That I shouldn’t had it on outside our Wing’s A/O.(. which may have been the tidewater region of Va. )
I wasn’t going to try n bluff him, it would of been disrespectful and against Regs even if he were with the ROTC aa an advisor. My patch wasn’t velcroed but sewn. A few of Guard troops had seen it and pointed it out .. but nobody made an issue of it.. When we got back down to the AFJROTC units A.O. The Colonel and I had a short talk and laughed over it.. something about if they got to be ‘butthurt’ can’t take a joke over a T shirt..
that I got in the early eighties..
when the sitrep happened. I think it was when we were supporting a country to keep the war from spilling from Chad.. Our base had
F-15s ..( the A-10s were a distraction to NOT give our base unwanted attention ..even the A/C numbers, logos were untraceable).
I was fortunate nobody asked where I was stationed because I wasn’t going to fib except to a
‘Butthurt’ treehugging civilian ..

Did he complete the mission (I assume he did)? Since you made the correction, don't dwell on it, continue to prepare yourself and your Soldiers for your wartime mission. If he has a pattern of pushing the limits, then conduct the appropriate counseling, but in the grand scheme of things this is a very minor thing - you took action already so move forward to the next mission.

I will defer to a CSM, like CSM Michael J. Uhlig , but I have seen many many folks wear tan T-Shirts with logos under ACU tops. They are GTG, until you are doing official duties in a T-Shirt.
