I have run into some difficult circumstances with the Army. As a result, in the best interest of my family, I am having to investigate ways to possibly get out of the military early. I don't necessarily want to, but I at least want to know what my options are (if any).

Quick Facts:

Assignment to Drum NLT 10 JAN 2016
ETS: 10 OCT 2018
Wife/kids cannot leave current state due to custody
I am an initial term soldier
Requested Korea assignment but branch manager said no
Willing to switch to USAR or National Guard but cannot due to time left on AD contract
I don't care anymore about being able to re-up or rank up
I've received mixed reviews on whether or not I can use a DCSS
I submitted a volunteer recruiting packet but was turned down b/c they wouldn't waive my time-in-service requirement (have 42 months; needed 48)

Please limit responses to useful information. I'm not looking for more pep talks or tough love rants.

P.s. If anyone give you crap about it.They don't know the answer and don't want to feel silly. It's a defense mechanism. A lot of people try to give other craps because they weren't given that option or mad at themselves for taking the time to research. I understand what you are going through. I am right now going to Syracuse University for IT certifications (Free) and started this week at campbel the Mechatronics program so I will leave with 5 certifications. The army had you for what it needed now it's time to take care of you and your family forget what people think they don't pay your bills. Army has these programs to reduce force for a reason done people are just to proud to use them. (Stuck in the past most of the time sleep with their ribbon rack lol) good luck!!!

AR 635-200 covers all ways to separate or chapter from the Army.

MSG (Join to see) - You are only allowed to decline orders (if that is the same a DCSS) if you don't have enough time left on your contract to complete the assignment. I do, so that wouldn't apply in this situation. (I appreciate you taking the time to reply, though. I keep hoping someone will have an idea I haven't thought of yet.)

Have you looked at AR 600-8-11. Chapter 2-15 covers compassionate deletions and deferment. As far as getting out goes, I don't think you can get an honorable unless you complete your whole contract, but it can be a general under honorable conditions.

The AR says do NOT use the dcss if you do not have enough time. That's the way I read it though, it's AR 600-280 so you don't have to take someone's word for it.

Disregard the last post, I see what your talking about. Looks like 600-8-11 might be your best bet. Everything in the army can be accomplished with a 4187.

You signed a contract with the government. You should see your obligation through to completion. If you assignment to Fort Drum is truly a hardship on your family you can request reassignment but you would have to prove the hardship.

She doesn't have to see her contract through if its not right for her. She is looking for the best interest of her and her family and that is always #1. I mean if not why would the army produce MILPER Message 15-019.

SGT Ben Keen - Just think that the "You signed it you must complete it" is discouraging for someone to research their options. Just sounds like it has a negative tone is all. I am for giving every person every option possible. I mean if I would have taken that phrase to heart I wouldn't be getting my A+ and Network + certifications along with the Mechatronics class for the Siemen's Certification. Which would allow be a better chance to get the 180 day job drop. Nothing personal.

But don't we all have some sort of family hardship to deal with while serving and beyond? My son was born while I was in Korea and my daughter was only 3 weeks old when I left for my last deployment but I knew I had to deal with be it because I made a deal with the government and while I feel for whatever hardship she might be facing I personally feel that one should see their obligations through.

I'm not saying it's the only answer but it's the one I would go with that's all.

SPC (Join to see) - Oh I'm not taking it personal I was just asking for clarification that's all. As I stated earlier it's just my point of view and if there is a way for her to do it and it's what's best for her situation then by all means she should continue to look into it.
