I read an article today about a British sniper who got six kills from one shot. The article is below. This got me thinking. If Congress wants to reduce military spending, then make half of our armed forces snipers, and the other half spotters. Just think of how much money we would save in ammo alone. Not to mention, payouts for death benefits would decrease exponentally since our military would be shooting from greater distances.

I would suggest not investing billions of dollars into MRAPs only to scrap them or give them away for free. I would also say that the Army shouldn't be buying "smart guns" at $27,000 a pop.

I would fire all civilians, bring all the US Troops home. I would bring all outsourced jobs back to the US. Finally, We as a Nation should mind our own business.

While I would not necessarily go to this extreme, I do think you are on the right path. When I first joined the military 19 years ago, most military jobs were done by the military. A few years after that, the military started handing over many jobs over to contractors and civil servants. The problem with civil servants is that they are accustomed to doing one job the same way for 10-20 years, and they do not change with the times. On top of that, many of them are retired SNCOs and senior officers who refuse to let go of their former rank. Similar story with contractors, except you pay a lot more for their service, and you deal with all the nuances of the contractor world (Federal Acquisition Regulation, DoD Ethics Law, etc). Bringing outsourced jobs to the United States would be great, but it takes a while to undo 20+ years of bad habits. Sending troops overseas to "fight" (using that term loosely, since we do not fight to win, but we fight to not lose) two wars simultaneously just is not working.
My modified proposal:
- reduce DoD dependence upon civil servants
- improve military transition to civilian workforce (not necessarily civil service)
- overhaul Federal Acquisition Regulation, DoD Ethics Law, and how DoD interfaces with contractors
- teach more skills in the military that transition well to the civilian workforce, and incentivize Americans to join the military to learn those skills (with the intent for them to serve an enlistment and then join the civil workforce)
- in a word, butt out of foreign affairs with minimal return on investment to national security

The whole troop putdown in Afghanistan really just ends up costing the DoD more money. I will give you an example.
In my 2010-2011 deployment my whole brigade deployed. For 2012-2013 we only deployed a fraction of the brigade. The way the troop cutdown works is you send less people to replace a unit each time. With that in mind, take a look at this.
The unit we replaced has a PV2 who spun the raid cams around in the Toc. A PV2 gets what? like between 20-25k a year? Then we come in, and because we have less people, we now had to hire a civilian to spin the raid cam around, for 100+k a year.

That is an interesting thought. But I am sure eventually the enemy would figure out what we are doing at find other ways not to be spotted. Plus I am sure that the schooling to turn everyone into sniper's or squatters would cost a pretty penny. I do agree that it would limit down the number of deaths though.

This was posted as humor, with a touch of serious thought. I posted this in response to another article I read about certain GOs telling Congress that we, the Soldiers, understand the need for paycuts. I personally do not remember anybody asking me if I understood, or agreed with, a paycut.
