There's probably several dozen reasons, however...
When you do laundry on ship, they end up in "batches" (section or squad), and it makes it a hell of a lot easier to sort that way. Rather than having to turn them inside out and find the stamp. I believe the Navy does as well.
Additionally, when you take your top off, you can see who the person is.

SGT Apollo Sharpe - And that is only part of the story,, now look at the DA pam I posted. Read the section HOW WORN., where is will tell you specifically how the name tape is to be worn. Not a suggestion, not an option, but specifcally how worn.
And again, still, round and round we go. You're convinced your right and nothing presented by me will change your mind... I applaud your willingness to help others, I simply ask, that since you will not accept the printed text from the regulation and DA Pam as proof my position is correct and yours is not, please pose your question to the Army G1
If the Army G1 responds to you that a local commander may authorize the wear of a name tape on the trouser Id happily except im wrong and that things have changed since i last asked them that exact question. Once you get a response, please come back to this thread and post it for all to read and use as resource

SGM Erik Marquez - I'll refer you to that very same DA PAM, 4-7J. It specifically lists insignias that aren't to be worn on combat uniforms. Notice how it's only restriction on nametapes is that they can't be Arabic.

SGM Mikel Dawson - I understand. As a "like courtesy" I "try" to keep my mouth shut regarding the "sleeves rolled/unrolled" threads which will be popping up over the next year.

But target of opportunity for a little interservice jokery.
