I would like to know if anyone has taken a reduction in rank to obtain an AGR position. If so, what are the procedures? Does that time in grade get pocketed or does it start over? Specifically, if you have X amount of years TIG, does that continue once you get promoted to that rank again or are you at zero TIG? How is the promotion system different? What is the purpose in rank reduction?

Unfortunately your time ingrade will reset. Any break in service is considered a reset of time in grade. A part time Soldier going on to Active status will have a reset of time in grade regardless of rank reduction. I've been through that with a couple of Service members before. Once you make your rank back your date of rank will be adjusted. AR 600-8-19 Ch. 10-18 Hope this helps.

I recently took a reduction from E-6 to E-5 to obtain an AGR position. (18 months ago.) My DOR went back to when I originally obtained my E-5. Originally I was told that when I make my E-6 back I will have a new DOR. However I was told recently that their has been changes and that for administrative reduction you will keep the TIG served at that rank. I do not have the regulation but I will ask my S1 guru and try to get you the answer.

I havea buddy who is an E-7, he is taking a reduction in rank to E-5 for an AGR spot upon our return from OS duty here. His thoughts, He has Ten years of active service, ten more with AGR he retires with a full 20. 1 he should at least make his 7 back. 2 You retire at your highest rank held
