I read a lot. I planned on going into the Army at an early age so I read a lot of history books, primarily on WWII and later. I would go down to the public library and checkout anything that I could read from those wars. One that stuck out was SOLDIER by LTC Anthony Herbert. It was his memoir of service in Korea and Vietnam, where he exposed war crimes that US forces were complicit in. I still have a copy of that book and just re-read it this year.

I hadn't read any. I was homeless; and just didn't go to the library. I was struggling to stay alive. My father was in the Navy; but he was very abusive. I believe that he was a Second Lieutenant.
I had no idea that I would ever join the Army. It certainly saved me from being homeless. THANKS ARMY!
So once I was in the Army; it seemed like everyone else knew what they were doing. But I had not a clue.
