What's the most unusual way you have seen someone be notified of selection for promotion?

I would have to say my own... I was deployed in Kuwait during the E7 testing cycle, so I tested when I got back. About 2-3 months later, I just happen to be on vMPF (I think) and saw there my rank had changed. After telling the MPF there was a mistake, they ensured me there wasn't and that I should have had it on a couple days earlier and that my OR should have been notified. Even my troops knew before I did, but no Commander or 1Sgt notification that entire day or the next morning, so I switched from E6 to E7 during lunch. The Commander and 1Sgt showed up the 3rd day to congratulate me... I think it was around that time when I decided 1 more trip to the box, then I'm out...

I completed PLDC at the end of January. Attended February drill and noticed I had been paid as an E5. Called our AGR and they said they'd look into it. March, same deal. So April drill I showed up with one SPC rank and one SGT rank on my BDUs. 1SG blew a gasket and asked me WTF was going on. When I told him about the situation it took about 10 minutes to locate a copy of my promotion orders, dated 9 FEB. No one outside the S1 shop had seen them.

I've seen people called to the 1st Sgts office thinking there was a problem.

When I was a 2LT, I got called out at first formation. Company CO used a black sharpie to color in the butter bar on my BDUs.
