Be sure to have a plan before you get out of the service and also apply early. Applying early can relate to going to school or finding a job. Applying early will give you an idea of whether your plan is going to work.
You might apply to a school and they might say you need a better GPA or need to take a certain test. You also might apply for a certain position at a company and they may say you need a specific certification or degree. What do you have to lose by applying for a job early. The worse case scenario would be you would get practice at applying and interviewing.
Applying early will allow you to shift your plan left or right, depending upon how early you apply. If you wait till the last minute then most likely you have failed yourself and your family. You could also potentially put yourself in a bad situation like being without a job and no way to pay your bills.

Outstanding advice SPC (Join to see)! Have you went through the Soldier for Life, Transition Assistance Program? If so, please share some of what you learned, where we can improve to make the program better. My thoughts are that when our Soldiers transition and become Veterans, the better prepared they are for that transition will help them become more successful and that is what everyone really wants to see.

CSM Michael J. Uhlig I am currently going through the program right now. It is a great program. So this is some of the best advice from that program, combined with my advice, along with some from my Father who retired 2 years ago with 30 years.
The one thing I wish the program covered more was how to find the right school for you if you plan on gaining a higher education.

I'm currently deployed and will be transitioning to USAR upon ETS.
I intend to go to school full time as well. Hopefully my education center back at home station can assist me with getting a smooth GI-Bill use with my school of choice.

Be sure to gather as much information you can from ACAP or Soldier For Life. They are very helpful.
