New to the area and base. First west coast duty station. What is there to do on and around the base?

Like SGT Ben Keen mentioned, I usually download apps for the area I'm in. I also use Foursquare, and also Yelp to find reviews. Sometimes Trip Advisor or similar sites will also give you some ideas for more organized outings, as part of a business that does tours and different things.
I also remember that I've known people who love and hate every single assignment. I'm currently in Italy, and I cannot tell you how many people complain about living here and want to go back to the States. So, if you hear that there's nothing to do and the place is horrible, keep looking until you find someone who makes the best of everything!

1.) Sea World
2.) Del Mar Horse Track
3.) San Diego Zoo
4.) "Hotel Del" (dining / relaxing)
5.) Sea Kayaking
6.) LEGOLAND - Encinitas
7.) Wild Animal Park / Safari Park - Escondido
8.) Whale Watching Tour
9.) Golf at NASNI
10.) But the swimming ...the Pacific is COLD!
I was up the road in Pendleton. My wife worked at NASNI. If you have a day, Disneyland, Six Flags, and much more is only a short drive north. I think you can still rent a beach cabana on Pendleton through MWR as well.

No problem... By the way, so much of those activities offer "military rates" --but, they're not advertised. Also, I'd recommend that you buy annual passes to the attractions you like. Most of these include free parking, unlimited admission, and perks (like behind the scenes stuff). My wife & I used to go to both Sea World and the Animal Park --just for an afternoon. Also, if you have little ones, you don't feel like you've got to spend the entire day at the attraction --as you can return on your own schedule.
Enjoy SoCal, brother!

Don't forget that Disneyland is not that far away. the base MWR should be able to sell tickets with military discounts (at least they used to).
