I would like to say that we would respond with strength no matter what, but I think it's actually more likely to depend on which NATO member, and which conditions Putin was able to manipulate to justify the actions.

I think that the Eastern NATO nations will take it seriously. After all, they've experienced Russian occupation first hand, and didn't like it. But I really have no faith in some of the western NATO nations. They've grown fat and happy living under the protection of the US, and have lost the fire in the belly to defend themselves.

I think the article does a really good job of describing a way through brinksmanship and hybrid warfare Putin could dislodge peripheral NATO countries, undermining its overall value.

Capt Richard I P., I would like to think that NATO would respond in a forceful manner. Frankly, I think it would be an imperative. NATO would look to the U.S. for leadership, and I would hope that we would respond forcefully as well; another imperative. I'm not sure the current administration would be so inclined. Number one.

LTC Stephen C., Sir, I'm not sure responding forcefully is in in the National best interest. I myself fall into other 'nuclear war is really scary' camp. Violence should be a last result both in interpersonal and international relations, and potential extinction-event inducing violence should be the lastest of results, as I see it.

Capt Richard I P., I agree that bringing world to the brink of WWIII is not the goal and that nuclear war is not the solution. Perhaps "forceful" is too strong a word, and perhaps "respond with strength" as expressed by LTC Yinon Weiss is more appropriate. However, some significant response would be required, as doing nothing would be perceived by Putin as weakness.
