Hello all. I am a single E-6 with no dependents. I used to live in the barrack but had to find a house (now live off-post) as I picked up E-6 in April with the start of receiving BAH.

My unit is soon to be going to Korea for 9 months rotation but will be coming back to current duty station once the rotation is complete. I am sure that I'll be residing in government housing once we're in Korea as the rotation is an unaccompanied tour for everyone. I don't mind staying in the government housing however I am concerned with the current housing because I am risking to loss my current off-post housing (if I don't receive my BAH during this rotation since there is no fund to maintain current housing).

Has anyone ever experienced this issue? I can only find information for the ones with dependents but I don't have dependents. I understand that 9 months is pretty long but why do I have to risk in finding another house once we get back from the rotation?

BAH is based on your permanent duty station (PDS), not a deployed location. As long as you don't change your PDS, then it continues as it did before.

If you want something authoritative, the FMR* is your "Finance Bible" when it comes to entitlements (specifically section 10.1.1).

SSG (Join to see) - Your response to "PFC Angela Noe" asking for clarification about some bases requiring you to break a lease and others not was (or will be) deleted. Not for anything you did, but that was a spam account you responded to.

The "Spam advice" was "Whether you continue to receive BAH during your rotation to pay for your current off-post housing depends on your specific circumstances and local policies. Some bases allow service members to retain BAH while deployed, while others may require you to vacate and terminate your lease."

As far as I know, there are no installations that require you to break a lease if you're going to be deployed - it's the option of the service member (general rule - there could be exceptions for special mission units, participating in a rental partnership from the base, etc.).

There are protections in the law (SCRA*) that protect service members if need to break the lease, but JBLM won't be forcing you to vacate your off-post quarters if you wish to remain. Again, there might be a unique situation if you're in a special category, but the ending of a typical "I rent an apartment off-base" lease will be up to the individual.

If your residence Stateside will remain in place waiting for you when you get back, you should receive BAH without Dependant rate while you're gone. If you and your unit go through DRC (Deployment Readiness Center), Finance section will be able to explain in more detail.

You will more than likely stay in government barracks with everyone else. Rotations overseas for less than a tour (1 year) are generally housed as if on rotation to a training center. You should continue to draw BAH to pay for your current place of residence. Unless your unit has told you to pack up and store your world then I am sure it will be flushed. Non of you will be in standard housing. More like old school barracks. I could be wrong.
