Are you aware that there have been 204 mass shootings in the U.S. thus far in 2015?

LTC Yinon Weiss 's observation that it is logistically impossible to maintain a MP force large enough to protect every recruiting station is correct. His comment caused me to think about every time there is a shooting the response is that the personnel at the location should be armed or armed guards should be present. Is this where we are headed and what would that look like? Last night's shooting in a Louisiana theater marked the 204th mass shooting in the U.S. during 2015. Shootings are occurring in so many venues that it seems impossible to defend against them. Is the answer increasing security? Strengthening gun ownership laws? The main point I'm trying to make here is that after each shooting we hear the same thing that personnel should be armed or that armed guards should be present. Are there alternatives to this reaction and if so what ideas does the rest of the community have?

I left stateside earlier this year. Unless it was really announced by the media, I had no clue. It's a sad time for our country, and I often worry about my children.

Reagan shut down mental hospitals in the 80s. In fairness they were snake pits, but 30 years later we have a need. The police and jails aren't equipped to deal with or warehouse and treat these people. We have plenty of guns but there are just too many and access is too easy. The Louisiana shooter was a known nut - nothing available to help him & protect us. We can't keep just accepting these losses. Some Navy recruiter brought his own gun to work for protection and shot himself in the thigh. This won't get better until we make an intelligent decision.

Maj Mike Sciales I agree this is definitely a problem. The unemployed/under employed do not have a lot of options when it comes to mental health care. Many are being held for their infractions in our local and state incarceration sites and are not receiving the help they need.

It should be noticed that the shooter killed himself as soon as he was confronted by the police. He would not likely have continued shooting, reloading, and shooting again if confronted sooner by armed personnel - either police or CCW licensed civilians.

Capt, he was leaving, blending in with the panicked crowd but returned to the theater and capped himself. Or so they say. Against theater policy, I always carry (I do everywhere legal anyway) inside. No way will I let my family or others die without me (attempting at least) putting lead poisoning into effect.

TSgt David L., according to the news I have read he was trying to escape with the crowd until he saw police converging; that is when he returned to the theater and capped himself. It was the confrontation with the police that ended his rampage.
He evidently had parked near the exit and had disguises to aid him in his escape.

Capt Seid Waddell - Right. That's what I was referring to but I guess I omitted the ''...he returned to the theater...". Otherwise I think we are saying the same thing.
