I really don't think anyone was ready for it. The whole point of it is to alter your lifestyle into that of a service member. There really isn't a way to prepare for that unless you attended military schools your whole life.

I had a book written about all of the different ways to prepare for combat; which I acquired long after I had served. I gave it to someone who was thinking about deploying; and unfortunately, I don't remember the title of it.
I certainly wish that I had read it; before I deployed.

SPC Margaret Higgins - I read a book called On Killing. I think that was a good one to read before I deployed. I was in OIF I. There really isn't much that could ever prepare a person for that.

I am POSITIVE NOT; 1LT Eric Rosa. I served during the Cold War. I never had to kill.
I HATE killing. As I am sure ALL us do.

No. I had no idea I'd be doing so much of the one thing I STILL hate - running. Everything else was an easy test of mental and emotional strength.

Nope. I had, had it with School, Didn't want to go to college. I wanted to work on Radios or with Technology and without college that is kind of hard. I was shy and very unsure of myself. Put myself in a Situation that would rocket me into someone completely new and different. The Navy put me back in School to be a Technician. Taught me how to "Learn". Boot Camp taught me that we are all pretty much the same (Can't be shy living with 60 other guys). I would say I turned out pretty good and a product of my environment. 21 years working with the Finest Scientist, Engineers and Technicians in the Navy.
